Many students have asked about this.
It is definitely possible with a little bit experimenting (and persistence). Perhaps the best way is to open the image file in Fireworks, click the Magic Wand tool, click the background (hold shift to do it all) then press delete on the keyboard. Save it as a Portable Network Graphic (.png) before putting into another program. Here is an example using my profile photo:

The fourth step will be to copy and paste the image into which ever program you need it. Note that this method doesn't work so well unless the background is all the same colour! (Thanks to James for his Garfield drawing.)
